The site at Civil Lines is a sprawling complex with the Metcalfe House also called Town Hall built in colonial style. It has various labs and offices of DRDO built over time. The site was a linear strip of land surrounded by huge banyan trees and the challenge was to preserve the trees.
To minimize the interference of foundations with the trees, the fifteen-storeyed building was designed with two structural cores balancing the linear form. The columns rise from the ground and taper outwards to support the structure to reduce the footprint of the foundation.
The unique structural design offers huge column-free office space with adequate natural light and ventilation. The large double-height reception provides a glimpse of the huge trees and landscaped courtyard beyond.
The internal office spaces take in ample light from all sides, taking advantage of the straight form of the building. The trees being on the West give refuge from the harsh afternoon sun.
